Good Friday’s Tenebrae Service
April 18 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm
On Good Friday, April 18, beginning at 6:30 pm, Christ Lutheran warmly welcomes you to a Tenebrae Service. Tenebrae is a Latin word meaning ‘darkness’ or ‘shadows’. The service is one of meditation and reflection. Scripture will be read and interspersed with prayers and songs that will take us back to the unfolding events as Jesus willingly went to the cross. We don’t call the day “Sad Friday” or “Terrible Friday.” We call it “Good Friday” because it is a good day for you and me. It is “Good” because Jesus loves us so much that He endured all and died on the cross for you and for me. He took OUR punishment for OUR sins on Himself that we might be forgiven and have life forever in Him.
The most distinctive aspect of the service is the use of a Tenebrae holder for several lit candles. The flames of these candles are extinguished one by one, representing the gradual descent into the darkness of death that Jesus experienced in our place, so that we could be saved from eternal death ourselves. The service will end in total darkness as we contemplate Jesus’ death and burial.
Please join us for this powerful and faith-enriching service.
